CALL FOR PAPERS
PEER REVIEW PROCESS
All manuscripts submitted to Writing from Below are refereed anonymously by two peer reviewers. We adopt a double-blind peer review policy, however authors will be given the opportunity to suggest the name of a suitably qualified individual within their field to review their manuscript at the time of submission. Peer reviewers are selected on the basis of their knowledge of their discipline and their contribution to the interdisciplinary field of gender, sexuality and diversity studies.
Writing from Below implements a one stage peer review process. If the manuscript is accepted for peer review, the two reviewers selected will review the manuscript and be asked to suggest one of the following:
- Accept without revision
- Accept with minor revisions
- Accept with major revisions/Resubmit
- Decline to publish
Manuscripts are reviewed on the basis of three key criteria: the original and significant contribution of the manuscript to the field of gender, sexuality, and diversity studies; the relevance of the manuscript to the editorial brief of Writing from Below, or to the specific call for papers; and the standard of writing, including content, structure, and style. Additionally, creative and non-traditional manuscripts are reviewed for their exposure of practice as research, and ‘outlaw’ (critical-creative, ficto-critical, etc.) manuscripts for their innovative exposure of the relationship between the critical and creative components of scholarly research.
Peer reviewers will be expected to return reviewed manuscripts with brief feedback and their assessment in regard to the manuscript’s suitability for publication to the specified section editors within twenty-eight days of their receipt of the manuscript.
